At the very end of the continent, in Argentine Tierra del Fuego, a quiet river holds one of the most sought-after fish in fly fishing: the sea trout, the famous sea run brown trout that runs up from the ocean and reaches uncommon sizes. I take anglers there to the Wuijoor Lodge, on the río Menéndez, an intimate lodge of four rods at most, offered exclusively in France with the agency DHD Laïka. Seven-night stays, with French-speaking support from the first day to the last.
The sea run brown trout
A trout born in the river, gone to grow at sea, and back bigger and stronger, with an iridescent brown coat. It surprises everyone who meets it, by its size and above all by the sheer violence of the fight. The prime window runs from the fourth week of February to the close, on April 30th. The lodge also holds resident brown and rainbow trout that spice up the days.
A rare place in the world
The Wuijoor Lodge offers a range of fishing situations that few places on earth can match. Because it holds both resident and migratory trout, you switch techniques: streamer on sinking lines or heads, dry fly, or European nymph. The río Menéndez, for its part, changes every week. Its flow and the colour of its water swing a lot, and when the rain sets in you have to get clever to reach these big fish. It is a river that tests even the most seasoned anglers.
The river: the río Menéndez
A little over an hour drive from Río Grande, on an easy gravel road, the río Menéndez winds through the estancias of the island. You fish single-handed, with no long casts: the river geography does the rest. It is water on a human scale, but it asks for reading, patience and a little instinct.
Wuijoor is the only lodge on the río Menéndez, and that is a rare thing: few places in Tierra del Fuego devote themselves to sea trout fishing with a single-hand rod. Here the size of the river does everything: short pools, water you can read, lies you approach with a single-hander, in single-hand Spey or a light switch setup, swinging the fly rather than reaching for distance. Technical, hands-on fishing on a human scale, a change from the long casts of the neighbouring río Grande.
A typical day
The day starts at 7am, breakfast around 7.30 while the guides get everything ready for the river. We fish until 1pm, then back to the lodge where the chef and the team wait with lunch. At 4pm, after a proper siesta, waders back on and out to the river until 9 or 9.30pm, depending on the sunset, before dinner and a well-earned rest. Two long sessions a day, timed to the light and the fish.
Gear
A single-hand rod in 6 to 8 weight, or a switch rod, fast action. No need for a very long rod or long casts: single-hand Spey techniques, or lines built for the Spey cast, are the best options here. For lines, a triple-density such as the Guideline 3D+ or a floating line with interchangeable tips, plus a set of sinking tips T8, T11 and T14 in 10 or 12 feet. The lodge and guides provide all the terminal tackle: leaders, tippet, flies, nets and rod racks. Bring waders and rubber-soled boots; felt is not needed.
The lodge and the table
The Wuijoor Lodge takes four anglers at most, in two double Premium Suites with ensuite bathroom and a view over the estancia valley. The table is first class: every day the chef dishes bring together produce from the sea and the Argentine countryside, with selected wines. In the evening there is no shortage of good whisky, good company and stories to share after the river.

Seven nights on site. Day 1: arrival at Río Grande airport, transfer to the lodge, free afternoon. Days 2 to 7: fishing on the río Menéndez. Day 8: back to the airport. The stay runs as a hosted trip: I am there with you as French-speaking host and interpreter, while the lodge local guides take you on the water. The return transfer to Río Grande airport, the fishing permits, accommodation, full board with drinks, guides with 4×4 vehicles, and the French-speaking host on site. - Do I need to be an experienced angler for sea trout?
- It is demanding fishing, but not complicated. It is mostly single-hand work, streamer on sinking lines and single-hand Spey, and Wuijoor is one of the few lodges devoted to that single-hand approach, because the size of the río Menéndez suits it. The guides and I are there to teach you if needed. What matters is the will to learn and a little patience with the water.
